It's all about the landing and the texture of the track. Up tricks give you more air and more stability. Side tricks are good for low jumps (such as the last jump on Toad's Factory). But, if you have a super high jump that is impossible to get a low jump on, I would recommend side tricks because it is easier to get an insta-wheelie after you land.

So for low tricks, I use side tricks, and for high jumps, I also use side tricks. So what you're saying is, up tricks are playing safe, but it's slower, side tricks are the best? What about the backflip, from the down trick?
